Discover the Fernão Pires Grape Variety
One of the most widely planted grape varieties in Portugal also to be found in South Africa and Australia, Fernão Pires carries the dual appellation of Maria Gomes. When ripe, its medium-sized grape clusters produce a golden yellow flesh with a juicy, distinctive flavour. Fernão Pires is used in the making of still and sparkling wines, as well as sweet vintages when harvested late. The microclimate around Lisbon, swept by Atlantic winds, gives it an aromatic profile that exhales fruits (apricot, lemon, sweet orange, green apple), flowers (mimosa, linden, rose), spices (pepper and bay leaf), and even honey. Sometimes used as a single varietal, Fernão Pires is sought-after in the red blends typical of the Portuguese vineyard. It is preferably drunk young.
